The Moorland Association has committed to sharing its draft response to the Defra heather burning consultation with members and supporters by the end of April. At that stage we will be encouraging all to submit their own views by 25 May.
The consultation aims to assess the potential impacts of additional regulations on moorland management. Given the significance of this issue, we encourage you to provide your insights and experiences to inform our collective response.
Background
Defra's consultation seeks to evaluate the necessity and implications of imposing stricter controls on heather burning, particularly concerning areas with deep peat. The proposals may include requirements for obtaining licenses to conduct burns on peatlands exceeding 30cm in depth.
These potential changes could have substantial effects on traditional moorland management practices, wildfire risk mitigation, and ecological balance.
